About Me

A Hobby born out of necessity

We used to own a farm in South Africa and in this particular cottage bees kept on finding their home, twice in the chimney and twice under the wooden floors. I called a beekeeping friend to take the colonies away and we placed them on the farm as hives. I bought a bee suit and learned some lessons about the infamous African "Killer Bees"....but that's a story for another time

My day job is mining engineering and in my work my passion is the green economy of the future. We should only mine the earth if it can be done in an environmentally, safe - and socially acceptable way. Whether we like it or not, society can't do without mining, especially if we want to transition ourselves to a more sustainable & green economy. As the saying goes "what isn't farmed is mined". And even with that, farmers can't grow crops without fertilizers, which also are mined, like phosphates (e.g. Siilinjärvi here in Finland) or Potash (e.g. Kali Salz in Germany).

Now you know the reason why we like our stoneware jars so much: "Buy them once, and re-use them forever"

The Arundon name

Our family name is van 't Riet, which in Dutch means "from the reeds". So when I set up my consulting company in Finland the search for a trade name ended up being a bit of a word play. Arundo is a genus of stout, perennial reeds in the grass family.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arundo). In the Finnish language ending a word with  "-n" creates the genitive form which is used to show possession of something. So with a bit of imagination Arundo-n is "of the reeds" with a hint to us being proud of living in beautiful Finland. Unfortunately I have moderate proficiency in the Finnish language.
