Our Story Cards

Beekeepers have stories to tell (the good, the funny, and the informative). When you buy our Stoneware Arundon Honey Jar you will get with it three story cards with artwork from Sandy Butchers.
1. A story card about "Caring for the Bees". Help the bees: plant trees, plant wild flowers, .....don’t mow the lawn. My wife thinks I am lazy when I don’t mow the lawn,....I respond in saying it is good for the bees which is true (although maybe it is indeed a lazy response whilst relaxing on sofa). In Sandy's story card the bees are pampered all the way
2. A story card about our "Techno Bee" Project. We have developed a Beehive monitor weather station with an Arduino. It measures temperature inside the hive and outside the hive. It measures the moisture inside the hive and outside the hive. It measures the weight of the hive, which is important to know for honey consumption rate during winter and honey flow during summer. A light sensor tells us about the weather and an infrared sensor at the entrance counts the bees flying in and out. Sandy has made really cool Steam Punk themed art work for this story card.
3. A story card about "Festooning". There is a thing called “festooning”. This is where bees form a chain by holding each other toe-to-toe. It almost looks like they are holding hands and it is super cute. Science is not completely sure the in’s and out’s but it is known it relates to hive building. To me it really looks like when they do this vertically hanging from a frame they create a perfect water level (plumb) making sure the wax comb is built perfectly straight down. It is also known that when a swarm is looking for a new home they know what the size of such a new home will be. We know they can measure, let’s say, the inside hollow volume of a tree. They probably do this also by festooning. In Sandy's artwork for this topic happy bees are holding hands
